Matt Layten earned his Masters in Kinesiology from San Jose State University. He is a USATF Level 2 Certified Coach in endurance events and USTFCCCA Certified Coach in strength and conditioning.
Coach Layten competed as a 1500 meter runner during his undergraduate studies at Cal Poly State University. He also managed the Cal Poly Distance Club program as a student, where he got his start in coaching and operations.
For three years, Layten served as an assistant coach for the cross country and distance track teams at San Jose State University, where helped revive the track and field program. During Coach Layten’s three years at San Jose State University, the men’s distance program became a top-15 team in the West Region for cross country and both the men and women achieved the highest Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championship finish in school history. Coach Layten helped the Spartans produce their first qualifiers for Division I NCAA Regional Championship meets , including Jennifer Beckingham in the 800m and 1500m. Layten also helped coach Craig Huff, who finished fifth place at the United States Junior National Championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 2015.
Coach Layten currently works on staff in an operations role at the United States Air Force Academy Track and Field/Cross Country program. Coach Layten trains runners in the Colorado Springs area by providing personalized and tailored programs to help them accomplish their goals.
